Are you dressing up for Halloween this year? If so, what are you going to dress up as?

My roommate and I were going to go as the Blues Brothers, me as Joliet Jake and him as Elwood. It would have been a good fit due to our mutual love of Stax and Motown as well as The Blues Brothers. I'm going as Brian Wilson circa 1966. I have black frame glasses, I'm heavyset like Brian was, and I have basically the same haircut as him. I'm going to wear one of my striped button up shirts and have studio headphones around my neck. I'll also do the weird little hand gestures Brian was famous for. I really dig that guy. It's a shame SMiLE took so long to complete and so much out of him. I'm debating whether or not to print out the record sleeve for Heroes and Villains and using that as a prop to make the costume more obvious. I should mention that it'd be for the costume party the university housing service is putting on. I figure it'll draw the hipster chicks in since it seems like every indie band cites Pet Sounds as an influence. Why not be more creative? How about claiming you're influenced by Smiley Smile instead? Besides I think Springsteen is becoming the new formerly un-hip artist that the up and coming groups champion. Or he's on the wane and it'll be somebody new. I'm hoping it'll be Ray Davies.

If you had the resources to set up something you have an interest or passion for what would you do?

I'd want to start up my own record store. Years of reading High Fidelity has made the idea very appealing, despite the dire straits the physical music retail industry finds itself in. There's nothing quite like going to an independently owned record store and finding an album you haven't been able to find anywhere else or to hear something the clerk plays that you've never heard and the immediately want to own. I think I could be happy if my life were like Rob Fleming's. It wouldn't be the most glamorous of careers and the pay might not be that good, but I think it'd be a lot of fun.

I also think I'd be perfectly happy running a comic book store. It'd give me an excuse to read singles in a more timely fashion and I'm fairly active on a comic message board so I'd have a good idea what's popular and what's not. I could also cater to a niche market by getting smaller books as well as big market books.

In both cases, I'd prefer to run the businesses with my friends. The short film we mad this summer for the 48 Hour Film Festival proves we're capable of working together and getting decent results. I think it'd a great job.

I don't have any business sense nor the desire to deal with all the headaches associated with retail, so it's off to law school with me.

A Response to Mr. President, don't apologize for me

This a response blog to a featured blog.

    http://silentseekr.xanga.com/701516200/mr-president-dont-apologize-for-me/

The author of the blog believes that President Obama was wrong to apologize to European leaders for American arrogance. If that was the case, then I could understand where the author was coming from. However there is more to the story.

    http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/northamerica/usa/barackobama/5100338/Barack-Obama-arrogant-US-has-been-dismissive-to-allies.html

This story in The Telegraph, a UK newspapers, sheds some light onto the subject. While President Obama does offer an apology for past arrogance, he does bring up the condescending attitude many Europeans have toward America, ignoring the good the United States has done, and focusing on the bad.

I believe that the nation should take a more conciliatory approach to foreign policy. The previous administration's policy was very divisive and unnecessarily created conflict.

Would it be logical to support a nation that pre-emptively strikes another nation? Of course not, that seems idiotic. Why should we get carte blanche? Is it because we're the U.S. and we're supposedly so good? Well if that's the case, then who watches the watcher? Attacking Iraq without provocation sends the message that pre-emptive war is all right. That's why we really couldn't criticize the Russian invasion of Georgia last August.

The idea that apologizing makes one weak is laughable. It takes more courage to admit when you're wrong and risk losing face.

Being stubborn leads to things like Vietnam and our current situation between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers.

Although I have to think that a fair amount of this is being directed at the president due to the D by his name.
